We inherently are connected to others, care about their well-being and wish to alleviate their suffering. This is compassion, and it lies at the heart of all spiritual and moral traditions.
Compassion can be cultivated through skills and practices that create a fuller understanding and respect of others and the commonalities we all share. The growth of compassion within a community is nurtured by awareness, education, and service.
In 2011 Compassionate Houston began developing a network of individuals and organizations invested in moving compassion forward in Houston. Its beginnings were based on the charter for compassion developed by Karen Armstrong. We call our network Houston's Movement for Compassion, through which we create opportunities for the people of Greater Houston to engage in compassionate work with and for their neighbors. More recently, we have developed an initial core of workshops, classes, and practice groups to help develop compassion skills, create harmony in relationships and grow peace within our city and the world.
