“The Spirit of Ubuntu” Program

Celebrating Ubuntu during Compassion Week, 11-13-2024

We are excited to invite you to Compassionate Houston’s network-wide event in collaboration with several other organizations: the free showing of the multiple award-winning documentary The Spirit of Ubuntu ("I am because We are"), including the producer performing live music from the film. The event is scheduled for World Kindness Day, November 13, a beautiful reminder intrinsic to Ubuntu that compassion unites us all.

What is the meaning of Ubuntu?

Ubuntu, in its essence, embodies a visionary potential to transform communities by fostering a deep sense of interconnectedness and shared humanity.

Rooted in the idea that "I am because We are," Ubuntu encourages a collective approach to problem-solving, where the well-being of each individual is intertwined with the well-being of the entire community. This philosophy can inspire communities to break down barriers, cultivate empathy, and work collaboratively towards common goals, leading to sustainable social, economic, and cultural advancements.

Ubuntu has the power to create a future where communities are resilient, inclusive, and driven by a shared commitment to the greater good.

“The Spirit of Ubuntu” Documentary

Award winning film director Kudzai Tinago teams up with Grammy nominated reggae legend Pato Banton and world-renowned keyboard player Antoinette Rootsdawtah and embarks on an amazing journey to 10 countries across the continent of Africa to explore and document the ancient philosophy of Ubuntu. The documentary not only highlights the diverse beauty to be found across Africa but also focuses on some of the most dynamic and visionary leaders who practice the teachings of Ubuntu in their daily work to improve the lives of the people in their local and surrounding communities.

In celebration of the 17 awards that The Spirit Of Ubuntu Documentary and The Baobab Short Film have recently won at International Film Festivals, Pato & Antoinette are heading on a world tour to host Free Film Screening Events of the movies at Cinemas, Universities and other venues in over 20 countries. Be sure to catch them in Houston during Compassion Week!
